    To address the issue of costumes, you must think of two things: character and setting.  What time period and what country is the action of the story taking place in?  And what type of position in life do these characters hold.  This play is set in Russia BEFORE the communist revolution.  You will want to look up pictures of Russia from that time to assist you.  I've included a link below.

    As for the characters, there is a wide range of socio-economic status amongst the characters of this plot.  The costumes will need to demonstrate the different levels of wealth.  I included the enotes link so that you can better identify what position each character holds.
