Hi Kwoo,
I do have a much tighter thesis statement, but did not want to put it on the internet in case the prof uses some kind of service that checks the web for plagiarism. I know his prompt for this paper, and my idea for responding to it is unique but I didn't want to take any chances of my thesis floating out there in cyberspace.
Thanks for letting me know I'm on the right track - I've been working diligently on it and am almost done...

You do sound like you are on the right track with this! This sounds like a very interesting paper, in my opinion! I believe you have chosen the right pieces to work with. I love all 3 of the ones you chose. You might want to reword your thesis statement to polish it up a bit. It is worded a bit awkwardly.
You do not necessarily have to compare each piece of literature as it relates to the poem...you could discuss each without comparing...

Hi! I'm writing a paper for Gothic Lit class. We have a few texts and handouts. We must take 1 handout, relate it to 3 texts, and use our analysis to argue a thesis about Gothic Lit.

The handout I’m using is Shelley's Hymn to Intellectual Beauty. I started with Radcliffe's On The Supernatural in Poetry, but wasn't into it. I want something more interesting than finding examples of horror and terror. We get graded on...

I would say a principal element is a sense of the weight of the past: hence the heavy, dark, brooding atmosphere; and the importance of the edifice.
Poe was innovative in forming a direct parallel between the edifice and the psychological state of the owner - most obviously in 'The Fall of the House of Usher'; and perhaps also, and more subtly, in 'The Cask of Amontillado'.

merc,
The genre of Gothic is a loved and critically acclaimed method for works of popularity. Gothic fiction tries to create terror and suspense and is usually set in isolated old houses, castles, or monasteries, populated by mysterious individuals.
Typical Gothic devices include locked rooms, ancient servants, dusty chambers, and decayed mansions—all properties found in "Frankenstein", "Dracula", and short stories such as “A Rose for...

Gothic literature has some element of horror in it, something terrifying, spooky, or horrific. It also often has mysterious elements, sometimes supernatural or dream-like qualities. These stories often take place in a spooky, dark, confined space like an ancient castle or empty manor house, a crypt, or a damp cellar. The themes of guilt and sin repeatedly appear in gothic literature, usually in reference to some crime committed or secrets...

"The first gothic novel is identifiable with a precision unusual in genre study. Horace Walpole began writing The Castle of Otranto in June, 1764, finished it in August, 1764, and published it in an edition of five hundred copies on Christmas Eve, 1764."

The independence of America and the French revolution both played a major role in creating the Gothic style of writing. England was losing in all directions, and many had felt so uncertain about their future. The worries and terrors of war gave writers some great ideas for their content. Because it was an uncertain time period, the Gothic style of writing became very popular rather quickly. It seemed to mirror what was going on...

Gothic literature was born from the literary movement of Romanticism in the 18th and the 19th centuries; the first gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto, was published in 1764, and was followed quickly by several others. Gothic stories and novels were written in Germany, France, England, and finally in the United States. Gothic tales represent a revolt against rationality; they cannot be enjoyed unless the reader is willing to "suspend...

Asimov is another good one to teach on the topic of science's good vs. its evil. The movie "I, Robot" was based on work by Asimov, and it stirs great discussion over how much man relies upon his technology, and how much scientific technology should be allowed to control our lives.Kids often dissect the topic of "Is science good or bad, and how should it be controlled, if at all?" They really get involved in this one, as...

I love "The Birthmark" and Frankenstein for these reasons among other stories. Another favorite of mine is "Dr. Hiedigger's Experiment." It is our job as teachers to get kids thinking and to keep them on their toes. They must be taught how to think and debate!
