Gothic Literature

The sense of "return" is of vital importance in the creation of the "uncanny" in Gothic fiction. The constant, compulsive recurrence of "something" creates individual uncertainty within the protagonist and the reader and thus addresses the fundamental question of how the new world deals with the burden of the old.
