Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was born on January 17,1860, in Taganrog, a city in southern Russia. He was one of six children born to Evgeniya and to Pavel Chekhov, a strict religious man who owned a grocery store and who was physically abusive with Anton and his two older brothers. Though Anton had a depressing childhood, he was educated at an early age and apparently well-read. He earned a medical degree from Moscow University in 1884, then began practicing medicine at the Zemstvo Hospital in Vosklressensk.
