The Misfit mentions "Jesus" when the grandmother is asking for mercy and connects him in a moment of unselfish reality to "one of her own babies".  He unloads the burden of his father's death, his own mistreatment in the world, how things have been unfair for him, and then he shoots her when she calls him one of her own.  One of the most famous quotes from this story is, "She would have been a good woman if she had had someone there to shoot her every minute of her life."  Critics and the Misfit both seem to realize that had she been in a dire situation every minute of her life, she would have been able to live with sort of unselfish grace all her life and she and her family would have been much better for it.
