Vivid images such as these are included to help the reader picture whatever it is the author is describing in great detail, to put the reader there in the moment with the character(s). The more vivid and specific the diction, the better the reader can picture what the author is talking about. Quite frequently, these images stay with the reader for life. For example, one image in a similarly dark story is one William Faulkner uses in "A Rose for Emily" is included in a paragraph about Miss Emily's appearance. In this paragraph, Faulkner says that Miss Emily's eyes looked like two lumps of coal pressed into dough. Although not the most aesthetically pleasing description, LOL, it is extremely effective!
