Two settings are especially important in the development of the plot, the diner where the family stops to eat and the rural location on the dirt road where the car wreck occurs. It is in the diner where the family learns details about the Misfit. These details foreshadow the family's eventual encounter with him. The setting of the car wreck is a rural setting, isolated and remote from any signs of civilization. The nature of this setting allows the Misfit and his companions to murder the five people in this family in a leisurely and horribly chilling manner without fear of being interrupted.
