When he first goes into the village, he does so in order to pick up his new wife. He does not have a very high standard for his wife, he just wishes that she has good skin. At home, on the farm, Wang Lung is a hard worker who eventually attains a large farm. He is well respected as a farmer. In the city, he is looked down on. He is sneered at and made fun of when he enters the House of Hwang. However, Wang Lung is able to shrug off this hurt because he knows that his farm and family is successful. His luck eventually changes, and he dies in utter destitution.
