Joy/Hulga's first taste of romance in the barn loft with Manley Pointer in Flannery O'Connor's short story "Good Country People" may also be her last for a good long time. Her highly cynical view of life will probably not be altered substantially, but her confidence, notions about men, and view of the outside world will be changed forever. When Manley steals her kisses and then her wooden leg, it reduces the strong-willed Joy to a blubbering child. The fact that such an apparently innocent rube had so easily fooled her will not be quickly forgotten. She had not believed in much, but she had believed in him.

"You just a while ago said you didn't believe in nothing. I thought you was some girl."
... "You're a fine Christian! You're just like them all--say one thing and do another..."

She will probably remain on the farm with the other women, unhappy and angry at the world that she views from afar.
