If there is any happy resolution, it would lie in Scarlett herself. Indeed, while Rhett is leaving and will not return, this becomes Scarlett's moment where she understands that her purpose in being exists without needing a man. Throughout the work, Scarlett had emerged as a stronger forces, but was still shown as one who depended on a man. This changes when Rhett leaves, as she understands that "Tomorrow is another day." This moment...

In the book by Margaret Mitchel, there is no happy resolution. The story ends in a cliff hanger very similar to the movie. If you want to follow Scarlett and Rhett you can read the book by Alexandra Ripley or watch the movie called "Scarlett" which follows the characters through the next decade or so of their lives.

True. And that is ironic considering that, upon visiting the Margaret Mitchell home in Atlanta (the museum), the first thing that comes in the tour are all the Irish superstitions that the family abided by, and the Irishness is quite a strong element in the everyday life of the author. It is most interesting. Would be great if you could visit it, though it is not as historical as you would think, but the diaries of the family are there.

Oh how I wish they did! I believe that Scarlett has enough ruthlessness and dominance to try really hard and get him back. I also think that he is quite wounded in his ego and might not give in for a while- but- once she starts playing a new dance, he might cave in. That would be just so delicious! They are the HOTTEST couple in American Literature!

I don't think so. Rhett went into the marriage understanding Scarlett's character and needs, but he also thought that by making sure she never wanted for anything, she would let herself love him. When he realized that even when she did have everything she wanted she was still carrying a torch for Ashley, I think that was the end of it for him. Even though Scarlett did, at the end of the book, realize she loved Rhett, I don't think she would...

I think it deals with a broader issue of values similar to the North and South. The War will end, but I don't think their history will come together. I think it is better like that. The North vs the South is very persuasive and emotional conflicts.

Since Rhett Butler plays such a major role in the novel, I would include an essay question that focuses on him. Here's one:
In literature, the Byronic hero (created by and named for Lord Byron of English literature) is a complex man. He is strong, mysterious, and even dangerous; however, he is also capable of deep love, gentleness, and compassion. In Gone With the Wind, how is Rhett Butler developed as a Byronic hero?

Sometimes this worked to her advantage; in one situation, it did not. Her obsession with Ashley worked against her achieving happiness. The usually realistic Scarlett viewed Ashley through the prism of Romance, unable to see him for the man he was until she had wasted much time, effort, and emotion trying to...
