Consider the question readers most often ask themselves and each other after finishing the novel: Would Scarlett succeed in getting Rhett back? Why or why not, considering their basic characters and their history together? Posted by mshurn on Jun 11, 2009. |

I don't think she will succeed in getting him back. I think it deals with a broader issue of values similar to the North and South. The War will end, but I don't think their history will come together. I think it is better like that. The North vs the South is very persuasive and emotional conflicts. Probably not. Scarlett and Rhett have too much emotional baggage...they have wounded one another too many times to be able to completely put it behind them and begin fresh. Posted by amy-lepore on Jun 12, 2009. |

I don't think so. Rhett went into the marriage understanding Scarlett's character and needs, but he also thought that by making sure she never wanted for anything, she would let herself love him. When he realized that even when she did have everything she wanted she was still carrying a torch for Ashley, I think that was the end of it for him. Even though Scarlett did, at the end of the book, realize she loved Rhett, I don't think she would ever be able to make him believe it. Posted by lynn30k on Jun 12, 2009. |

In reply to #3: From all the wounding, they are in essence the North and South of the Civil war. Posted by epollock on Jun 12, 2009. |

Oh how I wish they did! I believe that Scarlett has enough ruthlessness and dominance to try really hard and get him back. I also think that he is quite wounded in his ego and might not give in for a while- but- once she starts playing a new dance, he might cave in. That would be just so delicious! They are the HOTTEST couple in American Literature! Posted by herappleness on Jun 14, 2009. |

I believe that Scarlett would never rest until she did win him back. He is unable to resist her forever. Part of the joy of this couple is in driving the other crazy and then winning the other back. As much of a drama queen as Scarlett is, she is the catch of the South and Rhett knows it. They have had a marriage and a child--these are powerful bonds that will tie them forever. If we buy the fact that Rhett gave everything he had to the relationship with Scarlett, I cannot see how he can come back to her. I think that she would pursue them for a while, but if his heart really was ruptured by this relationship, I cannot see any reconciliation happening here. Posted by akannan on Jul 28, 2009. |
