James Bond is a difficult character to describe. Alert readers of Goldfinger will note that he has "blue-grey eyes" and "black hair" and may be taller than average. Critics often explain the lack of detailed descriptions of Bond in Fleming's books by interpreting Bond as Fleming's alter ego — a fulfillment of Fleming's fantasies about himself. This may be too easy a reading of the James Bond character. Many authors of popular fiction only sketch rough outlines of their heroes because they want their readers to see themselves in the hero's role.
