Answers:

  1. There are a couple of reasons that Jonas is interested in finding out where Roberto went upon release.  The most immediate reason is because he knew Roberto; Jonas had "helped with his feeding" the last time he was volunteering at the House of the Old, just a few weeks previously.  Jonas remembers Roberto as being "a very interesting man" (Chapter 4).

The second reason for Jonas's interest has to do with his own nature.  Jonas is special in that he is extra-perceptive.  He is inquisitive, and less likely than most to just accept the way things are without question.  Unlike Larissa, the old woman with whom Jonas is talking about Roberto's release, Jonas has "the Capacity to See Beyond" (Chapter 8).  He is very intelligent, and seiously wonders about things, and this gift of potential sensitivity and depth of vision and understanding is what the Committe of Elders recognizes in choosing him to be the next Receiver of Memories.
