As a Receiver of Memories, Jonas has received memories of happiness, love, and pain. When his friends play a war game, Jonas realizes that war was once real, and his friends have no knowledge of what it was really like. He cannot bring himself to play the game, knowing that once innocent people died horrific deaths. In gaining the knowledge of these things, Jonas feels that he has lost the security and carefree feelings of his childhood. He feels powerless because he wants to share his love for his friends, but they do not understand the concept of love without knowing the memories that Jonas knows. Jonas comes to the realization "that he could change nothing" (Chapter 17).
