Jonas' father is a Nurturer in The Giver.  At the beginning of the story, Jonas' understanding of the job of Nurturer is that he cares for the newborn babies.

His character and job become important in the story when Jonas becomes the Receiver and is able to understand further what his father's job entails.  Jonas sees his father take a set of twins, compare their weight and health, and "release" the smaller of the twins.  This is an important moment in the narrative because it is a loss of innocence for Jonas, and he also realizes that his father is not the man he believed him to be.  This is one of the moments that changes Jonas' view of the community and ultimately leads to the decision of taking the baby Gabriel and leaving.
