What experience did Jonas have in The Giver?

    Jonas was assigned the role of "The Receiver of Memories" in his community, where everyone has a specific job. Jonas' job was to inherit the memories of years past from The Giver. The memories were like nothing Jonas or anyone in the community had ever experienced before, memories of pain, joy, fear, colors, and music, things that no longer exist in Jonas' community. The community has been developed so that no one feels any pain or strong feelings; however that means that no one also experiences any love or joy. Jonas gets to experience these things through the memories, and it opens his eyes to what the community is missing out on, and the hypocrisies of the society. Jonas eventually has to make a choice to stay and live by his community's rules or leave for an uncertain world outside.
