Author Lois Lowry creates pleasant characters (and some vivid ones), gives us well-executed descriptions, and evokes a thematically unified alternative society. Primarily, thought, she communicates the value of individual human life in all its extremes—in highs, lows, and uniqueness. The conflict in the book is related to this. As Jonas learns more about the nature of the society in which he lives (primarily through his interaction with the Giver), he comes to realize that this is not how people should live, and that he cannot live this way. He rebels, creating a classic man vs. society conflict.
