Do you feel sympathy for any of the characters? Who and why or why not? Griet stands on the 8 point star and makes a choice. What do you think about her choice? Posted by sweetgurl19 on Dec 18, 2008. |
Girl With a Pearl Earring Group

Hello there! Here we are again, nearby "The Girl with Pearl Earring" character. I feel sympathy about Griet destiny, about her consciousness concerning her position in society. I don't feel sympathy for Catharina, Vermeer's wife, though her simplicity in understanding the sacrifices in the name of art is pathetic. As about Griet's choice, is an expected one. The decision, not to keep the pair of earrings, but transforming it into a small amount of earnings, is a wise one. In this way, she won't afflict her husband, keeping the pair of earrings, which is reminding him about her past, but she does keep the extra amount, saving, just for her, the memories of the past. I feel sympathy for Griet. She is a poor young girl with no real hope of a beautiful, interesting life. She understands Vermeer's work and sees it is beautiful, but she has to live a hard life of cleaning and washing. I feel sympathy for Vermeer, he is married to a stupid, greedy woman who does not understand him. His patron is an uncultured thug. His children are horrible. Only Griet understands him and she gets kicked out as soon as Mrs Vermeer suspects that he likes her. Vermeer is trapped, he is only free when he is painting.
