    The basic plot is that a young couple with no money each sell something very valuable to them to buy the other a gift for Christmas. The woman sells her hair to buy a watch chain, the man sells his beloved watch to buy fancy combs for her hair.

    The plot of the story, "The Gift of the Magi" is a couples search to buy each other the perfect Christmas present.  Neither one has money to spend on an expensive gift and they don't know how they are going to barter with anyone or get extra money to buy the present with such little time left.  They realize that they both possess things that they cherish but, they are also worth a great deal of money to someone else. They could sell them, the pocket watch and hair, and have the money they need for the gifts.  They have a solution to their problem.
