Pastor Manders seems is the flawed man of God. It is his duty to promote morality, yet he worries about his reputation and the public opinion , as well. He struggles with the idea of insuring the orphanage, because he feels people might think he should be able to protect it with God. Mrs. Alving is at first the "victim" of a cruel husband. She appears to have been the long-suffering wife of a philanderer, but as the course of the play goes on, she discovers that her husband was her victim. Oswald represents a younger version of his father. While Mrs. Alving loves him, and suffers for him and his plight, she does realize that he exhibits many of the qualities of her late husband.
