Many, many students choose to study abroad, especially in the SFS. Not unlike Campus Housing, the Office of International Programs ("OIP") does not have a good reputation among students. Clearly, the hurdles involved with dealing with OIP do not prevent the majority of the student body from leaving to study elsewhere for a semester or a year, and much of what they do is meant to protect students leaving the Hilltop for more unpredictable locales. There are a variety of locations available, but not as many as you might imagine for a university whose international focus is as championed as it is. The $48,000 price tag for a year of Georgetown education becomes particularly galling when you realize that Georgetown pays in the neighborhood of $10-20K to send you to another institution and pockets the rest, but I'm told this is to be expected at universities across the nation. Overall, study abroad at Georgetown adds a great deal to most students' college experience, but it's not perfect.
