Sediments are moved from place to place and dropped by the actions of water, ice, and wind.  As sediments gather and continue to increase they become deeply buried, compacted, and cemented.  This process is called lithification.  The rocks formed by this process are called sedimentary rocks.

“The branch of geology that deals with the origin, composition, distribution, and succession of stratified rocks is called Stratigraphy. Stratigraphy involves the study of strata relationships across time and space.”

Stratigraphy is the study of, among other types of earth, sedimentary rocks.
