VocationalPosted by enotechris on Wednesday February 11, 2009 at 12:37 PMSedimentary rocks are formed from compressed and solidified layers of organic or inorganic matter, such as mud, sand or gravel, building layer upon layer over eons. An organism may die and if the conditions are right, it can be preserved by the slow process of petrification in sedimentary rock, as mineral compounds surrounding the organism leach into it and replace the existing molecules. This process can take millions of years, but what's left is a perfect copy in rock of the once living organism. The majority of fossils are found in sedimetary rock.
