The boy, whose full name is George Eliot, Jr., lives with his grandmother. We're not told his exact age, but he must be around ten or eleven because he is beginning to be curious about sex. His brother Toddy finds him playing "mama and papa" with Minnie, and Snookum is afraid of being told on. Snookum spreads the news that a white man has been killed in a black man's yard.
