Lynching in the South
The long list of injustices suffered by the old blacks in the novel, including the threat and the reality of lynching, is rooted in the real experience of black people in the South. According to Stewart E. Tolnay and E. M. Beck, in A Festival of Violence: An Analysis of Southern Lynchings, 1882-1930, there were 2,805 documented lynchings between 1882 and 1930 in ten southern states.
