In a 1993 panel on literature and film in Chattanooga, Ernest Gaines said he thought film's only use was to give money to writers; he despised both of the films that CBS made for television of The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman and A Gathering of Old Men. While both adaptations seem to be good-faith attempts to render the novels on which they are based dramatically, Gaines would have none of the conversion of his works to film and did not, as Horton Foote did, help to adapt his wor's.
