Answers:

  1. These chapters cover the period between December 1830 and March 1832 in Catherine's life. Significant events include "breaking out day" - the first spring day when the weather is mellow enough for families to leave the confines of their farms, sugaring, the remarriage of her father, news of the Turner uprising and Catherine's own interactions with a runaway slave, and the death of her friend Cassie. Living through and reflecting on these events, Catherine grows in understanding and learns the value of acceptance. The story ends with Catherine leaving home to move far away with her old teacher and his wife, to care for their baby and pursue her own education.
