The setting is an upper class home and its garden. The story is set in the morning of a beautiful, warm summer day. The story doesn't specifically state a time period, but by the language and discussion of customs, the reader can infer the time period is most likely somewhere in the mid 1700's to early 1900's. It is definitely not a present day story. There is an external conflict, as well as an internal one. The external conflict is between Laura and her family, as she tries to convince them to cancel the garden party, due to the death of the neighbor. Internally, Laura is conflicted as she tries to reconcile her own ideas with the ideas and expectations of her family and society. While this is not unusual with today's teenagers, it is more so historically. The theme is growing up and realizing that your individuality is important. There is also the message, throughout, that despite what society may claim, everyone has the right to happiness. Laura feels this theme as the story goes on, as shown in her interactions with the delivery men and her request to give the band something to drink.
