He dedicated his life to the abolition of slavery in the United States. He was very instrumental in organizing the 54th Massachusetts Regiment in the Union Army during the Civil War.
He advised the governor of Massachusetts and later President Lincoln on matters facing the abolition of slavery and the transition from slavery to citizenship for the African Americans.
