    Rodman Philbrick's teen novel, Freak the Mighty, tells the story of Max and Kevin, two young boys with physical problems that, separately, make them outcasts at school. But together, they are the inseparable Freak the Mighty. Although no specific locale is mentioned, the setting is supposed to be Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the same home as the author. No year is given for the story, but it is apparently set in the present day. Freak the Mighty was first published in 1993, so we can assume that Max and Kevin's story is set in the late 1980s or early 1990s. The two boys first met in day care, so their first contact together may have been as early as the late 1970s.
