In the book "Freak the Almighty" Nick learns about how language develops and why words represent objects. He begins to think on the idea of creating a new word and comes up with a plan. He invents the word "Frindle." In order to get people to start calling a pen frindle, he gets them to sign an oath that they will only use the word frindle and not the word pen.
The students begin to use the word in class and it spreads around the school. Eventually a newspaper reporter hears about the word and situation and does a story on it. This leads to common use of the word frinlde. Once the word has become common, it is no longer unique and it becomes an everyday thing.
I believe the overall theme is that words are created by mankind and meaning is given to the object per what man intends it to be. Using this definition of the way words are formed, anyone has the ability to create a language.
The overall message in Freak the Mighty is: Friendship is important.
