   Max and Kevin, the main character's in Rodman Philbrick's Freak the Mighty, were first acquainted in daycare, saw each other once in third grade, and became neighbors the summer before eighth grade.  The boys become friends, and their first adventure involved leaving a gang of thuggish boys led by Tony D. stuck in a muddy pond after the Fourth of July fireworks display.  It's a win/win friendship for both boys.  Max carries Kevin around on his shoulders, causing Kevin to be able to move much faster than his handicap and leg brace will allow, and Kevin helps Max with his intellectual disabilities, eventually landing Max in the advanced classes so that he and Kevin can attend classes together.
