    In this story, both main characters are the target of teasing in part because of their size. Kevin, who suffers from a rare disease that keeps him very short for his age, is also highly intelligent. He also uses a sophisticated vocabulary that makes him stand out.

    Max is unusually large for his age. He has been attending a special education class at his school, due largely to emotional problems he suffers as a result of his troubled family background (his father murdered his mother). Max's size and quick temper earn him a variety of derogatory nicknames.

    When Kevin and Max team up to create "Freak the Mighty," they become "nine feet tall and strong enough to walk through walls. Sometimes we fight gangs. Sometimes we find treasure."
