In addition to long fiction, Franz Kafka wrote numerous stories, the most famous of which are Ein Hungerkünstler: Vier Geschichten (1924; A Hunger Artist, 1948) and The Penal Colony: Stories and Short Pieces (1948). He also left behind extensive diaries and letters.
