Posted by egraham17 on Tuesday October 13, 2009 at 8:33 PMVictor is greeted with a violent storm when he arrives in Geneva. The storm mirrors the violent passions raging inside him: his guilt and fear regarding his creation and his brother's death. Victor describes how:
vivid flashes of lightning dazzled my eyes, illuminating the lake, making it appear like a vast sheet of fire; then for an instant everything seemed of a pitchy darkness, until the eye recovered itself from the preceding flash. The storm, as is often the case in Switzerland, appeared at once in various parts of the heavens.
The unpredictable nature of the storm reflects Victor's unpredictable mood. He describes it as "beautiful yet terrific", which is much the same way many would describe his creation. As he wanders, he believes he sees his creature, "which stole from behind a clump of trees near me." When lightning flashes again, he sees that it is indeed the figure he brought to life, & the knowledge that he has been followed fills him with terror.
