The creature sees himself in a condition that he has not created. He understands that he did not ask to be brought forth, nor did he ask for the desertion that Victor displayed to him. At the same time, the monster grasps that his lonely condition can be alleviated with some type of interaction. This is how he sees himself after spending time and observing life at the de Lacey cottage. The perception of self is driven by both this observation and his own contrasting abandonment and estrangement experienced at the hands of Victor.
