On page 65, Like Jesus before his crucifixion, he is feeling despair to the point of bleeding tears. "Jesus wept" Elizabeth is described with the same emotions and she is giving the same line, "she wept". Posted by brandon21 on Jul 21, 2009. |

No, I don't see a comparison between Elizabeth and Jesus at all. For one thing, the quote "Jesus wept" has nothing to do with his thoughts about his crucifixion. The verse appears when Jesus hears news of his friend Lazarus' death. He is not weeping about his own unjust impending death; he is mourning his friend's natural death (it wasn't at the hands of executioners). Moreover, Elizabeth is mourning several aspects of the human existence. Obviously, she weeps for Justine's undeserved fate, but she has also been shaken from the foundation of her beliefs. Elizabeth, like Henry, is a true Romantic. She is optimistic and sees the best in human nature. Justine's circumstances start to sway Elizabeth, and she adopts an almost existentialist view of life--meaningless suffering. Finally, in regards to Elizabeth, she is powerless to do anything for Justine. In contrast, Jesus is not powerless, and in fact, raises Lazarus from the dead. If you want to compare a character from Frankenstein to Jesus, Justine would be a more apt comparison. Like Jesus, she meets her execution willingly. She knows that she has done nothing wrong but takes upon herself the penalty anyway. Posted by scarletpimpernel on Jul 21, 2009. |
