    At the end of Chapter 8, after Justine's execution, Victor's despair leads him to lament his father's and Elizabeth's grief over Justine's death.  She died as a murderess, but Victor admits (only to himself) that he is the murderer and that just as his father and Elizabeth have wept for Justine, they will soon weep when they discover what his hands have wrought.  Victor cries,

    "Ye weep, unhappy ones; but these are not your last tears!"

    Just as Justine's false confession has caused extreme unhappiness to his loved ones, when Victor makes a true confession of his deeds, he knows that it will destroy his family.
