Elhanan Rosenbaum is a learned man who witnessed the atrocities of the Holocaust as a child. He longs to serve as a witness and thus cherishes his memory. Wiesel manifests Elhanan's devotion to memory by portraying his undying love of his wife, Talia. She has been dead for many years, but he never forgets her and refuses to think about dating again.
