In chapter 11, Vinod visits Saladin to bring him the bad news that the bank in which they had kept the cup had been robbed and the cup taken. However, Vinod shows Saladin a newspaper article about a young American boy, Arthur Blessing, who has inherited an estate in England. The story is accompanied by a photograph of the boy inside his new home. Behind him on a shelf is a metallic object, shaped like a sphere or a bowl. Saladin immediately knows that it is the cup; he will stop at nothing to get it.
