This play is about being a Black woman. That means that all of the various speeches and interactions deal with identity (who are you, how do you know?), with female identity, especially in twentieth century America (what does it mean to be a woman/an American woman/a modern American woman?), and what it means to be Black in America. That means it deals with racism, and with pain and oppression, and with endurance.
