Ralph is still wearing his grey school shirt from the opening scene of the novel, and it is very dirty. The narrator notes that these boys no longer put on their civilized clothes "for decorum or comfort" but instead simply "out of custom."
What has changed about Ralph is his filthy, long hair and his bitten-down nails. Ralph does not remember restarting his habit of nail-biting, but the action may indicate that the pressure of leadership is starting to get to him.
