Yakov is the "fixer" to whom the book's title refers. Thirty years old, he is despondent in the book's beginning because his wife has left him and run off with another man. Having nothing to live for in the "Step," the Jewish settlement in the countryside, he leaves for the city of Kiev, hoping to make enough money to someday immigrate to a country where Jews are treated more fairly. In Kiev, he first finds himself surprisingly lucky—a man he meets, Lebedev, gives him a job overseeing a brick factory. He is, however, a Jew in an area where Jews are not supposed to live or work....
