Shadrach, understanding how much Jethro looked up to him and appreciative of his "quick mind and delight in learning", spoke to the boy's parents "about the promise he recognized in the boy. Jethro's father, Matt, was the one who suspected that Shad's praise might not be genuine; he wondered if the young teacher might be speaking the glowing words because he was interested in Jethro's sister. Jethro's mother Ellen, however, "had felt no doubts; the praise was in line with what she herself believed firmly" (Chapter 1).
