Dunstan can be seen to act as "fifth business" to Diana Marfleet, but I don't think that's a really useful way of thinking about it. If you do use that template, Dunstan is the "fifth" to her because he was engaged to her but didn't marry her. They had a happy engagement and a fulfilling sexual relationship when Dunstan was in England recuperating from his injuries in the war, but ultimately Dunstan decided not to marry her.
Dunstan chose...

Since you understand what "fifth business" is, think of how it applies to Dunstan. In what ways was he "someone who is neither a hero nor a villain", and how is he on the "sidelines" of life?
There is more than one way to think about Dunstan as "fifth business", I believe, but let's try this one. If the other "four" actors in the plot are Boy Staunton, Leola Cruikshank, Leisl, and Paul Dempster (Eisengrim), how is he neither a hero nor...

I want to answer this question from a very personal point of view. Robertson Davies was my professor in the University of Toronto in 1969-70, the year The Fifth Business was published. In those days, while discussing with him my doctoral dissertation on the first English actress on the London stage, Moll Flanders in the 1660s, I heard him speak constantly about his impending novel. Yes, we did speak to him about Boy and Dunstan as the "two...

Characters who are foils of each other are usually similar in some ways, but not in others. The importance is in the contrast between them, which should serve to illuminate something in one or both of the characters, or possibly in the overall plot. Mary Dempster was, in many ways, the converse of Mrs. Ramsay. In everything that Mrs. Ramsay was competent (such as housekeeping, running a family, having a good reputation in town and in...

The Vision of Dr. Faustus is a play on the old legend of a German alchemist who found a way to conjure up the devil. Upon meeting Satan, Faustus makes a pact with him. For a life of earthly pleasures Faust will sell his soul. The story of Dr. Faust has thus come to mean a scientific or magical man selling his soul for a life of decadence and pleasure.
You could consider Dunstan's peculiarly Canadian, Scottish puritanism, which...

That's an interesting question, bringing up the idea of what "valuable" means. Certainly to the reader Dunstan (formerly Dunstable) Ramsay's life seems more valuable simply because he is more self-aware than Boy Staunton. Boy Staunton (who started out as Percy Boyd Staunton) never pays for his part in what happened to Mrs. Dempster, and this, at least from the reader's perspective, colors his whole life. Because he was brought up in the...

Both of Dunny's introvert and extrovert sides come out when he's with Paul.
