Mattie, a teenager in the story, is very brave in the face of death and disease. She deals with the problems that she faces with maturity and responsibility.
Even when her Mother dies, and she contracts Yellow Fever, loses the coffeehouse and then her grandfather to murder, Mattie does not give up, she works hard to reopen the Coffeehouse.
