Yellow fever is incurable and can only be prevented via vaccination. In 1793, those who could afford to left the cities to avoid outbreaks. For the unfortunate victims of the disease, treatments included bed rest, efforts to purify the air, and quarantine. Dr. Benjamin Rush recorded his unsuccessful efforts to treat yellow fever, which included:

Eliza is a free black woman who works alongside Mattie's mother Lucinda in running the coffeeshop. Nathaniel is a young apprenctice to the painter Charles Wilson Peale who has a crush on Mattie. Aside from a casual acquaintance, Eliza and Nathaniel really do not interact very much in the story; they have no relationship to speak of. I wonder if you meant to ask about the relationship between Mattie and Nathaniel instead?

In the beginning of the book, Matilda wants to expand the coffeehouse's business. She thinks they should buy another coffee urn "to serve customers with more haste". She also believes they should make the facility itself bigger by buying or renting a part of Mr. Watson's lot, which adjoins the building to the north. That way, they "could offer proper meals, not just tidbits and rolls". Matilda dreams of including items like roasts and...

Laurie Halse Anderson sets the narrative firmly in Philadelphia in 1793 by alluding to famous characters who lived during those times and events which took place. Less than twenty years after the War of Independence, Philadelphia is still the center of government for the United States, and the Cook family's coffee house is located near both the State House where Congress meets, and the newly built residence of President Washington...

Dr. Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, was a prominent doctor in Philadelphia in 1793. He believed that Yellow Fever could best be cured by ridding the body of toxins that had collected in the blood, and espoused a very aggressive treatment of bleeding and purging for his patients. Dr. Jean Deveze, a refugee from Santo Domingo, was the primary physician in the asylum for the sick established by Stephen Girard, a...

Matilda's mother married Matilda's father against her parents' wishes. The family essentially "washed their hands of her when she ran off to marry a carpenter, a tradesman...when she was seventeen". Matilda's mother's family felt that her mother was throwing her life away, marrying below her station.
Matilda's father was a skillful carpenter, and he built his family "a sturdy home". In addition, he built the coffeehouse which over the...
