Several elements of "Fences" show that people have changed, or are in the process of changing. Some of the simplest have to do with their appearance. Cory leaves for some time, and when he returns, he is wearing a uniform. Since he left as a teen, this is a visible marker that he has matured (and of the course he's taken). Raynell's growth is the next change. She was an infant earlier in the play, but is a young child now. Where characters stand in relation to one another shows change as well. Earlier in the play, Rose often stood inside the house, apart from Troy, and she exiled him after he cheated on her. At the play's end, everyone literally stands together in the yard.
