When Rose is singing to herself, she is outside hanging up laundry and she sings to herself a type of prayer that asks Jesus to protect her like a fence. The actual lyrics to what she sings in, Act One, scene two, "Jesus be a fence all around me every day." It is said that while August Wilson wrote these lyrics himself, they are not from an actual song, they are supposed to have originated from African gospel and hymn music. This is different from the origins of the songs that Troy sings that often have a blues feel to them.
