Define the conflicts between Cory and Troy, showing how they develop. In what ways do they resemble those between Troy and his father, between all fathers and all sons ( think archetypal here). What does Troy want to protect Cory from, and what direction does he want him to take? Again, expound this to the archetypal stage here. Expound upon these ideas. Use appropriate quotations from the text to prove your points. Posted by class-of-2008 on Apr 15, 2009. |

Certainly, generational conflicts play a large role in the differences of perception between Cory ans Troy. Troy comes from a time of Plessy v. Ferguson, where distinct boundaries defined conception of self and the belief in possibilities. In contrast, Cory is a Brown v. Board of Education child, meaning he believes that there is little to impede his progress, different form his father. Where his father distrusts sports because of his own failures in regards to racial discrimination, Troy believes in his dream of pursuing football. There is a natural evolution in their relationship that leads to conflict. The father sees his son exerting independence. Either this triggers a feeling of departure and a companion feeling of abandonment and sadness or there is a certain amount of resentment that the child will be able to surpass the father. The reality is that Troy tries to repress and control his child, who rebels. There are generational issues that combine with issues of racial identity, contributing to their conflict and eventual distance. Posted by akannan on Jul 22, 2009. |
